Safari Zoo Run 2012

Safari Zoo Run 2012, The Royal National Lifeboat Institute’s annual Reindeer Run is once again being held at UK Safari Park, Knowsley Safari Park this weekend (Sunday 27th November 2011) where a 5k and 10k race will be held with a number of festive touches to get people in the spirit of Christmas. The charity event that had previously been held at the safari park last year will hopefully be attracting just as much of a turnout this year with two races; a 5k race (for 10+ years) and a 10k race (for 16+ years), but for those not up to the running there is still the 3.5k ‘Santa Saunter’ walk open to all ages as well.

The perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit as well as the spirit of giving, the RNLI’s Reindeer Run gets runners into the festive mood with free reindeer antlers, a bright red nose and winter refreshments provided, including mince pies and a hot drink to warm up after the event.

The race takes place on the picturesque Knowsley Hall Estate, starting and finishing at the Safari Park itself.  Participants will even be able to meet the elephants and giraffes at the start line and visit other safari animals such as meerkats and the safari parks infamous baboons.

Registrations are still being taken online at rnli.org.uk/reindeer and the 5k race costs

New Orleans Saints

New Orleans SaintsNew Orleans Saints, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton was asked this week about going against one of his former teams. He was an assistant with the New York Giants early in his career. Here is what he had to say. “Someone from New York asked me a similar question like that earlier in the week. It seems like a long time ago that I coached there. It was probably the most important stop for me as an assistant coach in my early career. I had just spent two years with Philadelphia in 1997 and ’98, and then I had that opportunity in ’99 to go to New York.

“What’s significant about it is there’s a rich tradition there of not only good football teams, but also an organization that has been looked upon by us in the league as one of the flagship teams and one of the flagship organizations. Just having the chance to work with so many of the people that are currently in the building and a number of people that are no longer with that team, it was a huge step for me spending four years there and having a chance to work with the late Mr. Tisch and the late Mr. Mara.

“Those were special opportunities that don’t come around very often for young coaches. In that setting in an area that obviously has a lot of media coverage to build a reputation and be a part of some very good football teams and more importantly some very good people is something that I’ve never taken for granted.

“Leaving for that opportunity in Dallas, I always looked back at those years as some that were for me years of me being very grateful and humble for spending four years there with the Giants and recognizing that’s a special place and it has been over the years and to have had a chance to go to Dallas, another place that has had great tradition, to some degree if you eventually have a chance to become a head coach you’re a little bit of a product of the people that were involved along the way – the real good coaches, the real good personnel people in the organizations that you’ve worked. I’ve been real fortunate that way.

“When it comes to big games and getting ready to play big games, I think we’re very unbiased as to who it is and more really focused on it’s a good football team and it’s a team that’s well coached. I’ve said this a number of times, whether it’s a Bill Belichick or a Tom Coughlin, these guys are special coaches.

“These are guys that have had success not just on a short-term basis, but over the long haul. I think that’s important to the history of our game and it’s certainly as a young coach, you look at it as a tremendous challenge. We know coming into this game that this is a team that’s hungry and will be ready to play. we’re going to have to have that same mindset and have to match that same intensity and have that same hunger coming off a bye.”

Zaheer Khan in as Yuvi, Bhajji left out of Australian tour

Zaheer KhanMumbai: Injury-prone paceman Zaheer Khan has been included while out-of-favour off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and middle-order batsman Yuvraj Singh have been left out of the 17-member Indian squad for the tour of Australia on Saturday. Mumbai batsmen Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane have also been included in the team while the second wicketkeeper’s slot went to Bengal stumper Wriddhiman Saha.

It’s still not clear whether Zaheer is match fit or not but his inclusion in the team would depend on his fitness level in the two Ranji Trophy matches he is scheduled to play for Mumbai before the tour.

Otherwise, the pace department has been chosen on the expected lines with both the rookies- Varoon Aaron and Umesh Yadav- finding their places in the team. Lanky pacer Ishant Sharma and Praveen Kumar will complete the five-man pace attack.

Though some former cricketers pleaded for Harbhajan’s inclusion into the side, it was difficult to ignore either Pragyan Ojha or R Ashwin after their superlative shows against the touring West Indies team.

Their performances clearly shut the door on the Punjab spinner whose recent Ranji form has not been satisfactory.

The batting department looks absolutely solid with the presence of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, VVS Laxman, Virat Kohli.

Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma would be the reserve batsmen. Rahane can even be used as the back-up opener as he started his Ranji career as an opener though he got most of his runs while batting at No. 3 for Mumbai.

Young leg-spinner Rahul Sharma, who featured in India’s squad for the ongoing series against West Indies, has been excluded from the team, to be captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni with Virender Sehwag as his deputy.

The selectors more or less retained the core of the team that has been doing duty in the ongoing series against the West Indies which meant that Harbhajan continued to be in the wilderness.

The Test series against Australia will begin with the Boxing Day (December 26) Test in Melbourne, followed by three other matches in Sydney (Jany 3-7), in Perth (Jan 13-17) and in Adelaide (Jan 24-28).

Team: MS Dhoni (capt &wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron, Rohit Sharma, Pragyan Ojha, Praveen Kumar, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha, Zaheer Khan
